Unseen and Grolsch are delighted to announce the details about this year’s Grolsch Unseen Residency! The Grolsch Unseen Residency awards one artist a two-month scholarship in a capital to create a body of work that reflects on the urban space in alternative and uncommon ways. During the 2018 residency, the artist will work closely with professional photographers and other leaders in the local creative industry.
This year’s international jury that selected the nominees consisted of Tristan Lund (Photography Consultant, Collection Curator at The Incite Project), Shinji Otani (Photographer) and Salvatore Vitale (Photographer, Co-founder and Editor-in-Chief of YET Magazine).
The jury report states: "This year's jury carefully considered the selected artists, discussing how each might benefit from the residency. The chemistry between each artist and a possible location was discussed at length, as the creative process and signature style of all the selected artists are quite different, grounded in a range of photographic methods and approaches.”
Sofia Ayarzagoitia (b. 1987, Mexico) is a visual artist who uses new photo documentary stylings based in a self-referential and intimate perspective. The characters that she interacts with transform her work into performative happenings.
Thomas Kuijpers (b. 1985, the Netherlands) is a visual artist whose series revolve around the way images and text are used to create a narrative about true events, addressing how they influence our perception.
Jannemarein Renout (b. 1969, the Netherlands) creates abstract colour prints using a document scanner, resulting in images that are both striking and sensitive.
Yusuf Sevinçli’s (b. 1980, Turkey) photographs are striking documentations of his surroundings, imbued with poetic flare and references to nostalgia.
Daniel Shea’s (b. 1985, the United States) work is defined by his acute eye for shape and contour, which are softened by his ability to channel a feel for texture and colour.
The five nominees will be invited to work on a more extensive proposal for the Grolsch Unseen Residency, and the winner will be determined in the following months. Be sure to check for updates on our website about the upcoming proposals!
